The volume of air displaced by this unit is sufficient to overcome severe chest leakage, yet the negative pressure always remains low to prevent damage to the lung tissue. A safety cutoff, set for approximately 27" (70 cm) of water, allows the unit to operate even if its tubing becomes obstructed. The SORENSEN Thoracic Drainage Unit aspirates at a flow rate of 30 liters per minute (lpm) at a setting only 4" (10 cm) of water and allows for a maximum setting of 23" (58 cm) which displaces 115 lpm in order to overcome severe leakage. The Model 2492 is offered with one 128 oz collection bottle and one 129 oz overflow protection bottle (Model number 2492-122) both graduated in cubic centimeters.
